 Dr. Kimberly Payton, EdD

The East County NAACP unequivocally condemns all acts of violence, threats of violence, intimidation, or harassment directed toward elected officials, public servants, community leaders, or any member of our community. There is no place for violence in our communities, regardless of political differences, public policy disagreements, or personal opinions.

The NAACP has always stood on the principles of justice, nonviolence, and the peaceful pursuit of change. While we recognize that communities may experience deep frustration, disappointment, and disagreement with the actions or decisions of public officials, violence and threats have no place in a democratic society.

We are especially concerned about threats and acts of violence directed toward elected officials, who serve our communities, and toward women of color, who too often face disproportionate levels of harassment, intimidation, and abuse while serving in leadership roles and engaging in public life. No one should fear for their safety because they have chosen to serve their community or exercise their voice.

Democracy depends on the free exchange of ideas, respectful civic engagement, and accountability through lawful and peaceful means. We encourage community members to continue making their voices heard by attending public meetings, organizing, voting, advocating, and participating in the democratic process.

At the same time, we call on elected officials to listen to the concerns of the communities they serve with openness, transparency, and respect. Meaningful dialogue—not fear or intimidation—is the path toward lasting solutions.

The East County NAACP remains committed to advancing civil rights, promoting equity, and fostering safe, inclusive communities where differences can be addressed through constructive conversation rather than conflict.

We stand united in rejecting violence in all its forms and reaffirm our commitment to justice, peace, and democratic engagement.

In solidarity,
Dr. Kimberly Payton, EdD.
